This diploma thesis deals with the ancient exempla in Hans Vintler's Die Pluemen der Tugent, which was completed in 1411. Vintler's didactic poem is the German adaptation of the Italian prose work Fiore di virtù, but also includes historical anecdotes from the German adaptation of Valerius Maximus Facta et dicta memorabilia by Heinrich von Mügeln. Together with other sources from antiquity to medieval times, these texts are compared to the Pluemen, although some of them have not been academically edited yet. The aim is nonetheless to investigate the development of the exempla with all congruences, variations and differences from antiquity until the Late Middle Ages. After analysing the exempla individually, their significance in Vintler's work and the resulting portrayal and assessment of antiquity in general will be outlined. - [Abstract]
