We believed we were doing a useful thing by reprinting this booklet, which in pure and frank language contains many beautiful teachings of the most famous ancient writers on morality. ... In order for this edition to be of greater use, I have taken care to make it as correct as possible. ... But examining the various codices that are in the Riccardiana Library, some of which were pointed out to me as very good by Prof. Vincenzo Nannucci, I realized that even in those editions considered the best there were several errors, and even errors that spoiled the meaning. With the help of these codices I amended some of these passages. ... With this intention I have also removed those passages in which the vice is reproached with an overly revealing portrayal of the vice itself, although all the other editors have been of the opposite opinion. - [Editor]
