A description of a fragment of a Catalan Bestiary held at the Arxiu Històric de Girona.
Among the remains of documentation extracted from the covers of medieval notarial protocols preserved in the Arxiu Històric de Girona [Girona Historical Archive] (AHG, also known as the Archivo Provincial de Girona [Girona Provincial Archive]), we find, in addition to interesting fragments in Hebrew and Latin, some in Catalan that have provided us with pleasant surprises. Specifically, if not the oldest surviving record of a Bestiari in Catalonia, it is one of the best examples of this textual tradition. Due to its codicological and paleographic characteristics, the fragment can be dated between the last decades of the 14th century and the first decades of the 15th century. The Bestiary, or Bestiari in Catalan, was one of the most widely distributed texts in medieval times (some specialists consider it the most popular after the Bible), and despite this widespread distribution, few copies have survived in Catalan (six copies of Catalan Bestiaris are known, complete or fragmentary, dating between the 14th and 16th centuries). - [Author]
