Description

The De avibus (On birds) and other texts of Hugh of Fouilloy. The text is often incorrectly ascribed to Hugh of St Victor.

Clark aviary group: Heiligenkreuz.

The De avibus is in part 4 (folio 135r-159r) of the manuscript. The other texts are: De medicina animae; De nuptiis;

De templo Salomonis ad litteram; De concordia temporum conregnantium in Juda; De potestate ligandi atque solvendi; De eruditione hominis interioris, liber III; Super Exiit edictum; De tribus processionibus celebrioribus; De XII abusivis saeculi; Liber de sacramentis.

The 30 illustrations are colored line drawings, usually showing the bird standing in a side view. Many of the birds look very much the same. The bird is often shown in a circle or square, with its name in red letters. Few show any of the characteristic features noted in the bestiaries.
