Description

This manuscript is an unusual combination of an encyclopedia and a Latin Physiologus. Another manuscript with this combination is Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Clm 2655.

The encyclopedia is the De naturis rerum by Thomas of Cantimpré (folio 1-145v). It is an abridged copy; many chapters and some entire books are missing or out of order.

The animal section is on folio 25r-89r. There are about 235 chapters missing.

  • Beasts (folio 25r-42v, 66 of 112 chapters present)
  • Birds (folio 42v-63v, 69 of 122 chapters present)
  • Marine monsters (folio 63v-66v, 21 of 59 chapters present)
  • Fish (folio 67r-72v, 29 of 92 chapters present)
  • Serpents (folio 72v-81r, 33 of 44 chapters present)
  • Worms (folio 81r-89r, 30 of 54 chapters present)

The Physiologus (folio 145v-158r) is illustrated with numerous column-width full color paintings, in frames. The images clearly illustrate the attributes of the animals discussed in the text. The animal and chapter order is identical to that in the Dicta Chrysostomi version of the Physiologus, with 27 chapters. However, it begins Iacob benedicens filium suum Iudam dicebat catulus leonis Iuda filius de germine meo quis suscitabit eum, which is like the usual version B beginning, though the B version chapter order is quite different.
