Description
The De proprietatibus rerum, an encyclopedia by Bartholomaeus Anglicus, in the French translation by Jean Corbechon (Livre des propriétés des choses). The four last folios contain various medical texts.
Only known manuscript of the Provençal version; Charles de Tourtoulon ("La Chirurgie d'Albucassis", in Revue des langues romanes , 1870), identifies the main characters of the Toulouse dialect, then spoken in the low country of Foix. This version begins with a prologue in verse, which is not found in the original. - [Calames]
Book 12 (birds) and Book 18 (animals) have small unframed illustrations for many chapters, mostly in the margins. Several pages in other books have small marginal illustrations featuring birds, animals and grotesques. There are at least two artists, and possibly three; one of the artists drew bird images that are tiny (fingernail size) though there was room for larger images.
The text sometimes differs from both the Latin version and Jean Corbechon's French version. Some chapters are in a different order (for example, the chapters on the horse are after the chapter on the beaver instead of after the dragon chapter), some descriptions have been condensed or expanded, and in Book 18 the chapter on the bee is missing entirely.
