Sources : Tranes

Thomas of Cantimpré [circa 1200-1272 CE] (Liber de natura rerum, Quadrupeds 4.100): As Pliny says, the tranes is an animal a little like a rabbit, which, although it is small in body, is strong in spirit and strong in strength, and is naturally courageous for fighting. To it also as a sign of the matter and the of its willingness to fight, nature placed on its head a helmet with which to protect the skull and the brain; and by which it would also be clearly pointed out that the providence of the creative nature ministered to every matter in an honorable and useful manner. This animal is of a red color and the most beautiful of its kind. - [Badke translation/paraphrase]
